The twins were very excited, well, about as excited as a pale, "children of the damned" type child can be, about the new pool Cristina and I had installed outside our summer cottage. For days, Victoria and Eleanor quietly and eerily watched Cristina and I sunbathe ourselves, lounge about in the pool on our floaties, practice scubadiving, and play quite intense matches of Marco Polo.
One of those days, I forget now which, I made a comment to Cristina about diving as we were drying ourselves off. Cristina didn't seem to hear me all that well, as she was draining the water out of her ears, but the girls heard me.
The very next day, to our astonishment, the girls built THE most rickety, splintery, tallest, shoddiest piece of carpentry skillage in the guise of something resembling a ladder and maybe perhaps a diving board.
We both got off the hook, of not having to use the Diving Board of Death, as Cristina dubbed it... as we feigned fear of heights, but the girls love it and spend hours up there. Playing crossword puzzles, bird-watching, tea parties, and spitting gross little girl phlegm globs on us.
I don't even know if the girls can swim, but they sure love being high.
